What is Apprenticeship Training?

Apprenticeship training is a course of coaching in an industry or establishment, under a contract of apprenticeship which consists of :-

a) Basic training component and b) On-the-job-training (OTJ)/ Practical training at workplace.

Is Apprenticeship Training mandated under the Act?

Yes – 

  • All establishments having manpower (regular and contract employees) of 30 or more are mandated to undertake Apprenticeship Programs during a range from 2.5% -15% of its workforce (including direct contractual employees) every year.
  • For establishments having a employees between 4 – 29 this is often optional.
  • Establishments have a employees of three or less aren’t permitted to interact apprentices.

Which sorts of industry covered under this program/mandate?

All sectors including manufacturing and services.

What is National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme?

National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS) may be a scheme of state of India to provide support to establishments undertaking the apprenticeship training. NAPS was launched on 19th August 2016.

What are parts of NAPS?

The scheme has the following two parts: Reimbursement of 25% of prescribed stipend subject to a maximum of Rs. 1500/- per month month per apprentice by the govt of India to all or any employers who engage apprentices. Reimbursement of cost of military training ( up to a limit of Rs. 7500/- for a maximum of 500 hours=Rs. 15/hour) by the Government of India to Basic Training Providers (BTPs) in respect of apprentices who come directly apprenticeship training without any formal training.

What are the objective of NAPS (National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme)?

  • To market apprenticeship training within the country.
  • To supply supports to establishments to undertake apprenticeship programs in the    following ways – 

(1)To support establishments, (Especially MSMEs) to interact apprentices under the Apprentices Act and pay stipend to them as per prescribed rates wherein under NAPS 25% of prescribed stipend subject to a maximum of Rs. 1500/- per month per apprentice is reimbursed to such establishment by the Govt. of India to interact apprentices. 

(2)To support the establishments, (especially MSMEs)- who do not have in-house Basic Training Facilities-to set up such facilities in house or at a middle outside its premises or to interact Training Partners to undertake the Basic Training activity on their behalf for fresher apprentices who need to undergo such military training before joining the workplace (on the work training) under the Apprenticeship program. Military training cost up to a limit of Rs. 7500/- per apprentice for a maximum of 500 hours is reimbursed to them (to be calculated @ Rs. 15/hour)/ or to the essential Training Provider engaged by them under NAPS by the govt of India.

What is Basic Training?

Basic Training consists of theoretical and practical/lab instructions segment of each Apprenticeship Program curriculum associated with a specific trade post which on-the-job-training is imparted to the apprentice. Basic training is an important part of apprenticeship training for those who haven’t undergone any institutional training/skill training before taking over on-the-job-training/practical training. Basic Training is imparted to fresher apprentices for acquiring a reasonable ability to handle Instruments/Machineries/Equipment independently before being moved to buy Floor/Work Area for practical / On-Job training.
