Indian Military Academy (IMA) admission process: A complete Guide

What is the Indian Military Academy?
The Indian Military Academy is a premier training institute where selected candidates undergo rigorous military training before being commissioned as officers in the Indian Army. Established in 1932, the academy focuses on developing Leadership, Discipline, Physical fitness, and Strategic thinking among future officers.
Eligibility Criteria to Join Indian Military Academy
To join the Indian Military Academy, Candidates must meet certain eligibility requirements. First, the candidate must be an Indian citizen. The age requirement generally ranges between 19 and 24 years for most entry schemes. Candidates must also hold a Graduate degree from a recognized university. Physical fitness and medical standards are also important because the training is physically demanding.

Application to be received by: May and Oct.
Tentative SSB Date: Sep/Oct and March/April.
Date of commencement of TRG: January and July.
Training Academy: IMA Dehradun.
Vacancies of each Course : 250 (Twice a year) by UPSC under the aegis of CDSE in March/April and September/October.
1. “NCC” Special Entry Scheme:
If candidate’s have passed the NCC “C” certificate examination there is a golden opportunity to secure admission to the Indian Military Academy.
- Qualification: Graduate in any stream with 50% marks.
- Age Limit: Age must be 19 to 25 years.
- Nationality: Must be an Indian Citzen.
- NCC Certificate: Must have NCC “C” certificate (Army Wing) with minimum “B” Grade.
- Marital Status: Unmarried
- Selection Procedure: No Written Exam for NCC “C” certificate holder.
- SSB Interview: Candidate’s will be called directly for the SSB interview.
- Training: After clearing Interview and Medical, Candidate’s will undergo training at IMA, Dehradun, Uttrakhand.
2. Entry Through the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination:
One of the most common ways to join the Indian Military Academy is through the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). This exam is held twice a year and is open to graduates from any recognized university.
The CDS exam consists of three papers: English, General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics. Candidates who perform well in the written examination are shortlisted for the next stage, which is the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview.
The SSB Interview Process
The SSB interview is a comprehensive evaluation process that usually lasts five days. During this stage, candidates are tested on their Personality, Intelligence, Leadership qualities, Communication Skills and Psychological strength. The selection process includes Group Discussions, Psychological tests, Outdoor tasks and Personal interviews.
The aim of the SSB interview is to assess whether the candidate has the qualities required to become an officer in the Indian Army. Only those who successfully clear this stage are recommended for further medical examinations.
Medical Examination and Final Merit List
After clearing the SSB interview, candidates must pass a detailed medical examination to ensure they meet the physical and health standards required for military training. Once all stages are completed, a final merit list is prepared based on performance in the written exam and SSB interview.
Candidates who make it to the merit list are then selected to join the Indian Military Academy for training.
Training at the Indian Military Academy
The training period at IMA usually lasts about 18 months. During this time, cadets undergo intense Physical training, Military Drills, Tactical exercises and Leadership development programs. The training is designed to prepare cadets for real battlefield situations and to build strong character and discipline.
After successfully completing the training, cadets participate in the prestigious Passing Out Parade and are commissioned as officers in the Indian Army.
